In this lesson, we introduce mythology and its significance in yoga.

Objective

Become familiar with the meaning, purpose and significance of mythology and deities in yoga.

What You'll Get

Define “myth” and differentiate it from stories in general. Expand on the purpose and significance of myths. Define deity, god and goddess and explain the role of deities in yoga mythology. Tell two creation myths, one featuring Vishnu and Brahma and the other with Shiva as Nataraja. Explain how you might utilize deities in practice and teaching.

  1. BRAHMAN — Unbound potential, universal intelligence, the formless spirit of the Universe; not to be confused with gods and goddesses or with the god Brahma
  2. DEITY — A god or goddess
  3. DEVA — Sanskrit word: “god, “good spirit,” “shining one”
  4. DEVI — Sanskrit word: feminine version of “devi”
  5. GOD — Masculine personification of transpersonal forces
  6. GODDESS — Feminine personification of transpersonal forces
  7. ISHTA DEVATA — Sanskrit phrase: a worshipper’s personal preferred deity
  8. MYTH — Traditional stories that represent a world view of a people
  9. PANTHEON — Recognized gods of a people
