Overview

In this lesson, we introduce the Marichyasana series of forward bends, named after the sage Marici.

Objective

Gain understanding of the progression from Marichyasana I through IV and how each variation builds on the previous one in complexity and depth.

What You'll Get

You'll learn the logic behind the four versions and how they're typically sequenced in Ashtanga and Iyengar traditions. We break down the shoulder binding mechanics, what's being massaged in the abdominal organs, and how these poses prepare the body for deeper forward bends and twists. You'll also understand the contraindications and how to modify for students with kyphosis or sciatic sensitivity.
