This is Ashtanga Yoga Tech Support. Real questions from the yoga community, answered.
I've been practicing for twelve years and get into flow states without systematically counting vinyasas in Sanskrit. Why does the count matter if I'm already having meditative experiences in my practice?
— from a MJH note
You’re probably already doing it without realizing it. Your body tracks the rhythm even when your mind doesn’t name it. Making it conscious turns accident into method.
Every posture has a vinyasa count—a japa. You’re doing mantra practice with your body. The Sanskrit numbers aren’t administrative. They’re the thing itself. Counting is the absorption practice, not a distraction from it.
When you make the count explicit, you’re learning your system’s literacy. You can’t know what you don’t know about the method until you track it properly. The refinement—the patient, persistent getting-it-right—that’s the yoga.
Learn to count to nine in Sanskrit. Then ask better questions.
