Objective

Become familiar with the key associations for each energy center in the seven chakra model.

What You'll Get

For each of the chakras, provide the Sanskrit root and its meaning, the number of petals on its symbolic lotus representation, the physical location, associated basic issues, color, goals, problems, right, element and kosha. Give examples of asana that may support the health of each energy center.

Following is an at-a-glance summary of chakra highlights. 

#1 Muladhara: The Root Chakra

  • Sanskrit – mula: root or foundation
  • Location – base of spine, tailbone
  • Physical Areas – organs of elimination, legs, feet, jointsskeletal system
  • Tanmatra – smell
  • Basic Issues – groundedness, stability, will to live, self-preservation, sense of trust and security
  • Color – red
  • Petals – 4
  • Goals – stability, grounding, physical health, trust, feeling of safety
  • Problems – fear
  • Right – to be here
  • Element – earth
  • Kosha – annamayakosha
  • State of Consciousness – jagrat (waking)
  • Bija Mantra – lam
  • Yantra – golden square
  • Planet – Mercury
  • Devata – Indra
