how do you find mental calm with yoga?

This is Ashtanga Yoga Tech Support. Real questions from the yoga community, answered.

The Question

I’ve been practicing yoga for a while, but I sometimes struggle to feel truly calm and clear headed. Do you have any poses, routines, or tips that help you find mental peace through yoga; whether it’s a specific flow, breathing exercise, or meditation technique? submitted by /u/Queasy-Inspector-780

Our Response

Okay. So here's the thing.

The poses aren't what make you calm. The routine isn't what makes you calm.

What makes you calm is staying with one thing. Completely. For the entire practice.

In Ashtanga, that one thing is your breath. Ujjayi breath. Every inhale. Every exhale. That's it.

You're not trying to calm down. You're not hunting for peace. You're just breathing. And counting. Inhale one, exhale one. Inhale two, exhale two.

The mind gets clear because you stop feeding it. You stop asking it questions. You stop checking in on whether you feel peaceful yet.

Pick one practice. The same one. Every day. Same poses, same order, same breath count. Do that for three months.

Not because repetition is magic. Because your mind finally stops trying to figure out what's next — and just lands here.

If you want the mechanics of the breath, check out the Ujjayi Pranayama study guide.

But really? Just breathe. Count it. Stay with it.

That's the tip.
