how do you know when you’re tired vs. when you’re moving badly?

The Question

I can tell when I've overdone it in practice, but usually only after the fact—when my form has already fallen apart or I'm injured. How do I catch that edge earlier, before bad performance kicks in?

— from a MJH note

Our Response

The rep where form degrades is a lagging indicator. You’re already past the threshold by the time you see it.

What you want is to get to fatigue before bad performance finds you. That means learning your body’s early signals—the subtle ones that show up before huffing, shaking, or collapsing. Breath getting choppy. Bandhas going offline. Your drishti wandering because your brain is trying to borrow energy from your eyes.

This isn’t about quitting early. It’s about information gathering. Note where fatigue starts. Then see if you can get to that same edge three times—not past it, to it. Consistent, unhurried practice builds this kind of literacy.

The old mentality is fast/slow, good/bad. The better one: what does the data say? High-repetition anything with lousy form just gives you poor conditioning and repetitive strain. Moving from naïve practice to deliberate practice means looking at old things with new eyes.

Catch your edge before it catches you.
