I’ve been practicing Iyengar yoga for about 3 years and studying the sutras for a few months. I’m looking forward to learning bandhas, as I have some fascia issues in my abdomen that I think they would greatly benefit. I’m worries about studying them incorrectly or too soon in my journey. Any advice on when to start, and how to go about learning them? Any advice is appreciated 🙂 submitted by /u/Few-Ear7073

You're not too soon.
Three years in? You're ready.
Here's the thing about bandhas: they're not advanced techniques you earn after years of perfect practice. They're foundational. You need them from the beginning.
Mula bandha, uddiyana bandha — these aren't separate from the practice. They're how you breathe. How you move. How you create stability.
Start now. Start simple.
Mula bandha first. It's a gentle lift of the pelvic floor. Not a clench. Not a squeeze. A lift.
Practice it sitting. Then standing. Then in your asanas.
Uddiyana bandha comes next. That's the low belly drawing back and up. Feel it at the end of your exhale.
Don't overthink it. Don't perform it. Let it emerge through attention.
And about those fascia issues? Bandhas might help. But they're not physical therapy. They're energetic actions that happen to have physical effects.
If you want structure, check out the Bandhas study guide on ashtanga.tech. It'll walk you through the mechanics and the feeling.
Start today. You're already late enough.
