This is Ashtanga Yoga Tech Support. Real questions from the yoga community, answered.
How do I really know if my practice is working? Everyone talks about what you gain from practicing consistently, but how do you actually measure the value of showing up every day?
— from a MJH note
You notice when you stop.
Not the first day off. Maybe not even the second. But sometime in that week away—when you can’t find the patience you usually have, when sitting still feels impossible, when your attention scatters like marbles on a hardwood floor—you realize what the mat was doing.
It’s not grand. You didn’t gain superpowers. But you had access to a certain settledness, a quality of presence, maybe just the ability to be with yourself without climbing the walls. And now you don’t.
The absence is the proof. The gap is the teacher. That’s the whole relationship with discipline in six words: I know the benefit when I don’t do it.
This is actually more reliable than the usual answer—that practice “changed my life” or gave you some measurable thing. Those stories are true but slippery. The gap doesn’t lie. It shows you exactly what you don’t have access to without the work.
Every Mysore student has had that week. Now you know what it’s for.
