Stuff in Cubbies at Studio?

This is Ashtanga Yoga Tech Support. Real questions from the yoga community, answered.

The Question

Hi, I feel like I am the only one who gets nervous about leaving my phone, keys, and credit cards in the cubby when I go into yoga class. I walk there, so I can't leave it in my car, and I don't want to be rude by bringing all my stuff in and piling it next to my mat. I've never been to a studio that has lockers! I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who is anxious in class, wondering if anyone will take my stuff, instead of focusing on my practice. Ideas? Thanks! s…

Our Response

You're not the only one.

But here's the thing: it's not rude to bring your valuables in.

Nobody cares.

Put your phone and wallet in a small bag. Tuck it at the top corner of your mat. Out of the way. Done.

I've been teaching for years. Never once has someone complained about another person's small bag near their mat.

You know what is distracting? Spending ninety minutes wondering if your stuff is still there.

If your studio has a problem with it, they'll tell you. They haven't.

And if you want to go lighter: get a running belt. Wear it under your shirt. Phone, key, one card. Forget it's there.

The practice is hard enough without adding imaginary problems.

Bring your stuff in.

Focus on your breath.
