the thing that brought you to ashtanga doesn’t have to make sense

This is Ashtanga Yoga Tech Support. Real questions from the yoga community, answered.

The Question

I came to Ashtanga for reasons that feel superficial or embarrassing—not spiritual, not traditional. Does that matter? Should I be pretending I had some deeper motivation?

— from a MJH note

Our Response

The practice doesn’t vet its entry points. It doesn’t care if you showed up because of a Madonna album, a breakup, a bad knee, or a dare.

We carry this weird guilt about our origin stories. Like we’re supposed to have arrived via some approved path—a Sanskrit text, a pilgrimage, a near-death experience. But most of us wandered in for reasons we’d rather not announce at a dinner party.

That gap between the romanticized doorway and the actual one? That’s where the practice lives. You don’t get points for how you arrived. You get the work because you kept showing up after the initial reason stopped mattering.

The embarrassing thing that brought you here is probably the most honest part of your relationship with yoga. It’s the unedited version. The one that didn’t pass through the Instagram filter or the spiritual marketing department.

So stop apologizing for it. Your unlikely gateway isn’t a bug. It’s a feature. It’s proof that the practice reaches people where they actually are, not where they think they should be.
