The Question

What does it mean when a teacher says the recent tech support posts are based on what students are doing in the room? Is the shala supposed to work like that—where students become the source material?

— from a MJH note

Our Response

Yes. That’s exactly how it’s supposed to work.

You show up with your body, your stuck points, your questions, your breakthroughs. The teacher watches, adjusts, explains. Then writes it down. The teaching doesn’t come from some abstract principle floating in the ether—it comes from what the room produces. Your hamstrings. Your breath pattern. Your nine months of struggling with backbends.

This is collaborative research. You’re not a passive recipient sitting in rows. You’re a source. The curriculum is whatever you bring into the room and whatever gets solved there.

If you read a post and think “wait, that’s my thing”—you’re right. It probably is. Twenty-six slides on one student’s practice isn’t excessive documentation. It’s proof someone was paying attention.

Most yoga contexts treat students like consumers. You pay, you receive, you leave. Here, you pay, you generate, and the written record reflects that back. If that makes you uncomfortable, good. It means you’re actually in it.
