Become familiar with back pain and issues in general, and teaching considerations for supporting students in relieving or accommodating back pain.v

Prevalence of Back Pain


  • Estimates are that 80% of the population will suffer back pain at some time.
  • In the U.S., back pain is responsible for over 264 million lost work days per year.
  • Low back and neck pain are among the top five causes of disability, according to the Global Burden of Disease.

Potential Causes


Back pain may be caused by:

  1. Congenital (present at birth) conditions such as some types of scoliosis
  2. Musculoskeletal problems such as injurySI joint issues or sciatica
  3. Postural imbalance
  4. Degenerative disc disease or conditions such as spinal stenosis or spondylolythesis
  5. Osteoporosis
  6. Problems with internal organs such as kidney disease
  7. Chronic pain for which there is no identifiable cause
