How to lift the leg higher in utthita hasta padangusthasana D and forward fold in C?
Height in the D variation (leg held up, no hands) is an active hip flexion problem, not a hamstring flexibility problem. Most people have far more passive range — how high someone can put your leg — than active range, which is how high your own hip flexors can pull it and hold it. If your leg drops the moment you let go in D, you don’t need a looser hamstring; you need stronger hip flexors at end range. Train that directly: lie on your back and do straight-leg active lift-offs, raising the leg as high as your psoas and hip flexors can hold without momentum. That strength is what shows up as a higher D.
The C variation — folding the torso down to the lifted leg — is a different demand: that’s hamstring length on the standing-side hinge plus trunk control. Hinge from the hip with a long spine rather than rounding to chase your chin to your shin, and keep the lifted leg active so it doesn’t sag while you fold.
Across both, drive the standing hip down and stack it over the ankle for a stable base — a wobbling standing leg caps how high the other one will go. Build the active lift off the mat and it transfers straight back into the pose.
