your confidence helps with my confidence — what does that mean?

This is Ashtanga Yoga Tech Support. Real questions from the yoga community, answered.

The Question

Michael said during an adjustment, "Your confidence helps with my confidence. That way, my confidence can help with your confidence." What does that mean? I thought the teacher was supposed to be the one holding steady while I'm the mess.

— from a MJH note

Our Response

You’re not a mess being filled by a steady hand. You’re half the system.

When you show up with even a flicker of willingness—trying the thing, breathing through the shake, not collapsing into drama—that feeds the teacher’s read of what’s possible. It’s not performance confidence. It’s signal. The teacher sees what you’re offering and meets it. Then reflects it back, amplified.

This is why the Mysore room isn’t a lecture hall. The teacher isn’t broadcasting to passive receivers. They’re adjusting in real time based on what you bring. Your steadiness lets them be bolder. Your fear makes them gentler. Your readiness changes what they offer.

What do you give the teacher? Information. Energy. Proof that the method works when someone actually does it. What does the teacher owe that gift? Attention. Honest reflection. Not flattery, but faith in your capacity that’s based on what they see you do.

It’s a loop. Not a hierarchy. The room works because everyone’s in it.
