Course Objectives

Through this course, you will:

  1. Gain a comprehensive understanding of various pranayama techniques and their benefits.
  2. Learn to control and extend your breath in a way that enhances physical and mental well-being.
  3. Develop the skills to integrate these breathing practices into your daily routine or yoga practice.

This course is designed to deepen your understanding and practice of various pranayama (breath control) techniques. Each section focuses on a different aspect of breathing, from balanced breathing patterns to more complex practices involving varying inhalation and exhalation ratios. Let’s explore each part of the course:

Section 1: Free Breathing – Sama Prana/Sama Vritti 1

  • Topics Covered: This section introduces the concept of Sama Prana or Sama Vritti, which translates to ‘equal breathing’. The practice involves maintaining an equal duration for inhalation and exhalation. This fundamental breathing technique is essential for calming the mind and preparing for more advanced pranayama practices.

Section 2: Viloma

  • Topics Covered: Viloma pranayama is an interrupted breathing technique, where the breath is paused at regular intervals. This section dives into various stages and complexities of Viloma, teaching you how to gradually build your capacity for breath control and retention.

Section 3: Visama Vritti A – 1:2 – 5-16 Second Base Progressive

  • Topics Covered: Visama Vritti A focuses on an unequal breathing pattern with a 1:2 inhalation to exhalation ratio. This practice, starting with a 5-second inhalation and progressively reaching up to a 16-second inhalation, helps in calming the nervous system and improving lung capacity.

Section 4: Nadi Shodhana Practice 1 – 1:1 6-16 Progressive Base

  • Topics Covered: This section introduces Nadi Shodhana or alternate nostril breathing with a balanced 1:1 ratio of inhalation to exhalation. Starting from 6 seconds and extending up to 16 seconds, this practice is essential for balancing the body’s energy channels.

Section 5: Anuloma Viloma A

  • Topics Covered: Anuloma Viloma is a form of alternate nostril breathing similar to Nadi Shodhana but with a specific focus on purification. This section will guide you through the nuances of this practice, enhancing your understanding of energy flow and breath control.

Section 6: Visama Vritti B – 1:3 – 5-16 Second Base Progressive

  • Topics Covered: Building on Visama Vritti techniques, this section deals with a 1:3 inhalation to exhalation ratio, where the exhalation is three times the length of the inhalation. This practice is particularly effective in deep relaxation and stress reduction.

Section 7: Visama Vritti C – 1:4 – 6-16 Second Base Progressive

  • Topics Covered: The most advanced of the Visama Vritti practices covered in this course, Visama Vritti C has a 1:4 inhalation to exhalation ratio. It starts with 6-second inhalations and extends up to 16 seconds, promoting an even deeper state of relaxation and mental clarity.
